Small Woods are the UK organisation for woodland owners, workers, supporters, and social foresters. We stand for living, sustainable woodlands alive with wildlife, people and work. Managed and used well, small woodlands are vital to thriving local economies, wildlife, and the health and wellbeing of local communities, as well as hugely valuable in the fight against climate change.

Looking after our small woodlands
Well over half the UK’s small woodlands are neglected, overlooked and under-valued. These woods are in danger of disappearing through development for new roads, for agriculture, absorbed within gardens, and for industrial use, if insufficiently valued and protected.
Small woodlands need our care and protection to realise their potential. In the fight against climate change, these small woodlands provide us with so much: they are rich habitats for wildlife, they slow storm water runoff preventing flooding, they filter and clean the air and they provide places for recreation and therapy. Small woodlands can also be hugely productive, growing many thousands of tonnes of timber every year. If we sustainably harvest a proportion of this growth, they can provide us with wood fuel and wood products, help keep the woodlands healthy, and also provide much needed employment.
Help us protect and care for our small woodlands now and for future generations. Find Advice and Information on sustainable woodland management.
